NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – The Australian Defence Force reported that a 28-year-old Army serviceman lost his life after a military vehicle overturned during a training exercise at Mount Bundey on Monday. In the same incident, five other soldiers sustained injuries. The Defence Force confirmed the soldier’s death on Tuesday, stating that the family had been notified. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence added that support services are available for the personnel and families impacted by the event.

Northern Territory Police responded to reports of the rollover around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. Emergency response units from CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Two of the injured soldiers were transported by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at roughly 7:30 p.m., with three additional personnel flown out later that evening. All five wounded soldiers received hospital treatment following the crash. On Tuesday, authorities did not disclose further details about the nature of their injuries.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, announced that an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal incident has been initiated by the military. The crash site was secured by military police immediately after the accident. An independent land accident investigation board will also review the rollover and the events leading up to it. Northern Territory Police are assisting Defence and conducting inquiries for the coroner. At this stage, no cause of the vehicle’s rollover has been publicly announced, and no findings regarding responsibility or contributing factors have been made available.
Investigations by Army and police continue
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier following the confirmation of the death. Defence Minister Richard Marles also extended sympathies and described the event as a significant loss for the Australian Defence Force. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro praised emergency personnel involved in evacuating the injured soldiers. Defence reaffirmed its commitment to supporting those affected, while investigators examine both the crash and the training activities conducted at Mount Bundey.
The Mount Bundey Training Area hosts Australian military exercises and allied training exercises in the Northern Territory. The site is used for various activities, including live-fire drills. The recent crash marks another tragic incident involving the Australian Army’s training operations in 2026. In May, Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle died during parachute training at Jervis Bay after a mid-air collision during the exercise, though another paratrooper was treated for minor injuries.
Previous fatality at Mount Bundey
Mount Bundey was also the location of a separate deadly training accident in 2017, when Private Jason Challis died during a live-fire urban training exercise. The Northern Territory coronial inquest examined the circumstances surrounding that incident. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty to a workplace health and safety offence related to his death. That case is distinct from Monday’s vehicle rollover, which is still under investigation by military authorities and the coronial system.
The Defence Department has not disclosed the name, unit, or service details of the soldier who died in the latest incident. Additionally, the vehicle involved and the specific training activity underway before the rollover remain unidentified. The Australian Defence Force stated that further information will be released when appropriate. Northern Territory Police continue supporting the coronial inquiry, while the Army conducts its internal review. No official cause or conclusions regarding the circumstances leading to the soldier’s death have been announced yet.
